What is a Hospice Volunteer?
Hospice was founded by volunteers who believed the philosophy of
Hospice should be based on giving of one’s self to others.
Volunteers have made a difference to Hospice patients and their
families, to their staff, to their communities and to one another.
North Mississippi of Oxford looks to volunteers to be the eyes,
ears and voice for us in our communities, and as such, our volunteers
are a vital part of our team approach to caring for those entrusted
to us.
Volunteer Requirements
Those interested in being a volunteer for North Mississippi Hospice
of Oxford must be 18 years of age or older and have time, patience,
energy and warmth. Volunteers must be in reasonably good health,
be able to provide their own transportation, and have completed
the Hospice Volunteer Training session available through our office.
Types of Volunteers
Direct Care Volunteers work in conjunction with other members of
the Hospice Team to provide support to the patient/ family. This
support may include reading to a patient, conversing, playing games,
watching TV etc. Many volunteers help with daily activities such
as transportation, running errands, or some light housekeeping.
Other volunteers help with providing Spiritual support.
Indirect Service Volunteers provide services NOT requiring direct
contact with a patient of family. Some examples of the ways they
help us include, telephoning other volunteers, planning or assisting
with special events such as the annual memorial service, or performing
clerical duties in the office.
Bereavement Volunteers follow up with survivors during the 13 month
Bereavement Services period. They may make phone calls or visit
bereaved families in their homes.
